TATOPANI, Sept 24: The government has requested the Chinese authorities to let Nepali herders from Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha districts, which borders on Tibet, to graze their cattle in the meadows across the border.

The Nepali officials made the request during a border security meeting here on Tuesday.  The Chinese authorities have promised to make a favorable environment for Nepali herders to use the Tibetan lands, the Nepali officers told media as they emerged from the meeting. [break]

“The lack of grazing grounds is severing affecting livestock such as yaks and mountain sheep, and the herders are struggling to sustain their livelihood. So we have urged the Chinese officials to let them use the Tibetan meadows,” said Chief District Office of Sindhupalchowk Dili Raj Pokharel.

“Since the ancient times the residents of these districts have been taking their cattle to Tibet for grazing. But lately, the Tibetan villagers have been chasing them away,” he added.

A few months ago, the locals of the two districts had also urged the Chinese ambassador to Nepal, Wu Chuntai, to address the problem.
