A joint meeting of a high-level committee led by Deputy Prime and Foreign Minister Narayankaji Shrestha and a taskforce under the committee took the decision on Monday in a bid to regulate foreign employment sector. “The meeting has decided to tighten the process for issuing work permits to eight Gulf nations -- Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Lebanon and Jordan -- as Nepali jobseekers have been found abusing visit visas to enter war torn countries such as Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan,” a senior official, who was present at the meeting, told Republica on Tuesday.[break]
A press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Tuesday, said a meeting of the high-level committee has been called for Wednesday to decide whether or not to issue fresh work permits to risky destinations.
Though the government has banned Nepali workers from working in Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan, a number of Nepali migrant workers are heading to these countries through illegal channels.
The committee has also decided to install high-resolution Closed Circuit TV at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
