Govt to form anti-money laundering dept soon

KATHMANDU, March 27: Finance Minister Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai on Friday said that the government will soon form a new Money Laundering Investigation Department (MLID) in order to control the crime of converting black money into white and misusing money for terrorism and anti-social activity. While citing that the government will not tolerate illegal activities, may that be tax evasion or money laundering, Dr Bhattarai said, "We will soon make arrangements of physical infrastructure, human resources and necessary capacity building trainings to control the crime of money laundering."



Dr Bhattarai said this at a program on anti-money laundering organized by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Friday. At present, Revenue Investigation Department (RID) is carrying out the function of MLID.



Speaking on the occasion, Finance Minister Dr Bhattarai further said that the government will also take steps to strengthen Financial Information Unit (FIU) of NRB, which is keeping track of flow of money in the financial system.
