Govt preparing to appoint Provincial Chiefs and declare National Assembly poll date

KATHMANDU, Jan 2: The government has made preparation to appoint Provincial Chiefs and declare the date for National Assembly election in consultation with major political parties.


Nepali Congress leader Bal Krishna Khand said that the government started the preparation after the top leaders of the NC suggested to Prime Minister and NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba for the same in a meeting held at the official residence of the Prime Minister at Baluwatar this morning. 


After the meeting with NC office-bearers and leaders, Prime Minister Deuba said that he would hold necessary consultations with top leaders of major political parties immediately.

PM Deuba said that he would hold consultations with CPN (UML) Chair KP Sharma Oli, CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Presidium Chairman of Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal, Mahantha Thakur, and Chairman of Federal Socialist Forum Nepal, Upendra Yadav, in this regard. 


During the meeting, the NC leaders suggested to PM Deuba to appoint Provincial Chiefs immediately, to declare the date for National Assembly election and to prepare a necessary mechanism for the election. 


Meeting the Prime Minister a few days ago, the office-bearers of the Election Commission had urged PM Deuba to declare National Assembly election date and to appoint Provincial Chiefs. There is a legal provision that the EC should submit final result of Provincial Assemblies to the Provincial Chief. 


The meeting also held a discussion regarding the issues raised in the party rank and file for calling the meeting of the central committee and Mahasamiti (general body) of the party after the election, said leader Khand. 


On the occasion, pointing out the need for broader unity in the party, Prime Minister Deuba sought suggestions as time has come to call the meeting of the central committee and Mahasamiti. 


Leaders participated in the meeting suggested him to call the central committee meeting along with preparation of National Assembly election and the central committee meeting would take a decision regarding Mahasamiti meeting. 


Present in the meeting were NC President Deuba, senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel, General Secretary Dr Shashank Koirala, Treasurer Sita Devi Yadav and leaders—Khum Bahadur Khadka, Purna Bahadur Khadka, Bimalendra Nidhi, Dr Ram Sharan Mahat, Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, Mahesh Acharya, Dr Minendra Rijal and Khand, among others.
