KATHMANDU, Sept 18: The CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli alleged that the present government had manipulated tax rates in various import items to amass billions of rupees from unscrupulous businesspersons.
Speaking at the 8th central meeting and national gathering of Nepal Civil Service Employees Association, Chairman Oli said that the government is amassing billions of rupees by reducing or waiving custom tax and excise duty for some companies.
Revised interest rate corridor system introduced
Stating that the issue of tax deduction and waiver are being raised by normal citizens and the media, Oli said that the government can no longer hide the issue. “We can clearly see how the government has decided to grant a waiver on custom rate and excise duty to some companies. This has been a deal of millions of rupees,” he said.
“How can the government manipulate billions of rupees of the nation's revenue? There is no way to deny that a deal was made through a careful setting,” he added. “Even the people and the media can sense the foul play at hand. There is no way to deny it.”
Republica and its sister publication Nagarik Daily had reported that Finance Minister Janardan Sharma’s controversial decision to provide a waiver on custom and excise duty on the import of sponge iron could be a case of policy corruption. Finance Minister Sharma has introduced this controversial decision through the substitution bill presented in parliament last week.
