KATHMANDU, Nov 30: The government has asked an individual returning from foreign visits not to bring in gold jewelry, alcoholic beverages, mobile phones and laptops beyond the limits prescribed by the law.

Issuing a public notice on Sunday, the Department of Customs (DoC) said the immigration authorities will seize the quantities exceeding the restricted limits of these products. According to the DoC, it has to take the measures as many traders have been found luring innocent travelers to carry the contraband to fulfill their interests.

The notice comes in the wake of the government looking forward to checking import of luxury goods amid growing pressure on the country’s foreign currency reserves. By revising monetary policy last week, Nepal Rastra Bank has also vowed to restrict import of conspicuous products.

The DoC has said returnee migrant workers as well as those arriving in  Nepal from foreign countries are allowed to import a single unit of tablet computer, laptop and mobile phone for personal use. “Import of these items in more than the prescribed limit is subjected to pay duties or will be seized,” reads the DoC notice.

The government body has also strictly restricted importing more than a liter of alcoholic beverages per person. In case of gold or golden jewelries, an individual is allowed to bring in only up to a weight of 50 gram.

For the gold jewelry weighing 50 gm to 200 gm, a traveler needs to pay customs duty as per the law. Any quantity over 200 gm of gold will be seized, according to the DoC.
