While inking the midnight agreement among the three major political parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML -- the Maoists had agreed to extend the Constituent Assembly (CA) term on the condition that the prime minister would resign immediately to pave the way for the formation of a national consensus government. “Constitutionally, this government can´t be termed a caretaker one but politically its status is becoming weak,” Khanal told reporters.
He said the three-point pact should be implemented and the present coalition needs to be immediately replaced by a national consensus government. “The days of this government are numbered and the new coalition will replace it shortly,” he said.
When asked who can be the suitable candidate for the next government, Khanal said anyone who can garner majority support in parliament and take other parties into confidence can attain the post.

He said the prime minister can be selected either through consensus or voting in parliament. He, however, said that the new government should run on the basis of consensus.
He said there was no point in objecting to Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal leading the new government. But he said anyone heading the government should come from a civilian party.
Stating that Prime Minister Nepal was ready to step down, he said forging consensus among parties is the need of the hour. He also said that current government had failed to deliver in terms of concluding the peace process and drafting the constitution.
