The government has stressed on building sports infrastructures.[break]
“Sports infrastructures will be constructed, expanded and improved. Emphasis will be given to the construction of multi-purpose sports complexes with the participation of private sector,” reads the policy and programs.
As government has already agreed to host the 13th South Asian Games in Nepal in 2014 and to organize the Sixth National Games in Western Nepal.
Meanwhile, the policy and programs has given emphasis on improving legal framework necessary for the implementation of the sports policy.
NSJF institutes Welfare Fund
Nepal Sports Journalist Forum (NSJF) has officially instituted Sports Journalists Welfare Fund in collaboration with Mega Bank on Sunday to support sports journalists in need.
NSJF instituted the fund during their three-day program of celebrating World Sports Journalist Day that falls on July 2.
The welfare fund has a seed money of Rs 1,50,000 at present as NSJF instituted the fund with Rs 100,000 available in their account and Mega Bank added Rs 50,000 for the seed money.
National Sports Council Member Secretary Yuvraj Lama lauded the NSJF initiatives and promised to support the welfare fund.
“I will take up the fund´s agenda in NSC board meetings,” said Lama.
Speaking to the press, Mega Bank Consumer Banking and Corporate Affairs Chief Ravina Deshraj Shrestha said that the bank is happy to support sports journalists in their initiatives.
According to NSJF First Vice President Ajay Phuyal, NSJF has formed separate board to handle the fund and formulated special regulations to run the fund.
Meanwhile, NSJF President Niranjan Rajbanshi vowed to increase the seed money of the fund to at least Rs 1 million.
Archery players denied visa
Three Nepali archery players could not participate in the World Archery Championship that kicked off on Sunday in Italy as the French Embassy in Kathmandu refused to issue a Shenzhen Visa to them.
Nepal Archery Association (NAA) organizing a press conference in the capital on Sunday, claimed that the three players and an official were denied visas despite submitting all their documents to the embassy.
Prem Prashad Pun, Jeet Bahadur Moktan and Naresh Kumar Basnet were the players selected for the championship while NAA President Laxman Shrestha was scheduled to lead the team.
“This championship was the chance for Nepal to score minimum points which was required for the wild card entry for the Olympics,” said Shrestha.
He also accused the Ministry of Youth and Sports of not cooperating with the NAA in sending the players for the championship. Despite this , Nepal still has a chance to qualify for the Olympics but they have to perform well in the Continental Qualifying in October.
Nepali shuttlers lose matches
Nepal lost both matches in the ongoing U-19 Asian Badminton Tournament being held in India on Sunday.
Nepal was defeated by Hong Kong 5-0 in the mixed double category on Sunday while Indonesia defeated Nepal 5-0 on Saturday in the same category.
Nepal will face Singapore on Monday.
Nepali boxers fail at President Cup
The Asian Games bronze medalist boxer Deepak Maharjan and Maya Chaudhary have lost their respective matches in the 21st President Cup Boxing Championship on Sunday.
Maharjan was defeated by a Korean boxer by 10-9 in the 81 kg weight category.
The hope of Maharjan for making a hat-trick bronze medal wins was shattered. Maharjan had won bronze medals in the Kings Cup held in Thailand last year.
In the Women´s 51 kg weight category, Chaudhary was defeated by a Filipino boxer.
Double delights for VS Niketan
VS Niketan ´B´ opened the Premier Cup 1st National Senior 3-on-3 Men and Women´s Basketball Tournament with double wins in the men´s category on Sunday.
During the course of registering two wins VS Niketan beat Golden Gate ´C´ 12-6 and thrashed Rupandehi 19-12 in the matches played at the National Sports Council Covered Hall.
In the other matches of men´s category, Samakhusi beat Naya Bazar Club 19-17, Golden Gate ´B´ edged past host Premier college ´B´ 16-15. Golden Gate ´A´ ended the match against Golden Gate ´B´ before the regulation time with the score of 21-10. Any team that scores 21 points wins the match.
Host Premier ´A´ thrashed VS Niketan ´A´ 21-8 while South Siders beat Premier ´D´ 20-18 and Morgan overcame Golden Gate ´C´ 17-11. In the women´s category, NASA defeated Premier College 14-11 while Nakhipot edged past Morgan College 14-13.
Altogether 18 men´s team and eight women´s teams are participating in the first edition of the tournament.
Rai wins gold in 10 m air rifle
Ashmita Rai of Nepal Police clinched the title of women´s 10 meter air rifle defeating national record holder Ashmita Rana on Sunday at the Satdobato Shooting Range.
Rai scored 386 out of 400 for the first place. Rana scored 385 off 400 while Phul Maya Kyapchhaki scored 378 points. Rana has the national record with 389 points off 400.
In the women´s 10 meter air pistol, Sunita Maharjan from Nepal Army clinched the top place despite the points draw with Sima Tuladhar of Nepal Police. Both the players scored 348 points each but Maharjan was awarded top place as she had better shot series. Sabita Basnet satisfied in the third position with 346 points.
