A meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday endorsed the work plan for the Decade prepared by the Ministry of Energy.
It is the fourth time the government has declared an energy crisis. The first energy crisis was declared in 2008. Then energy crisis was declared in 2011 and 2012. But the declaration largely remained on paper only as the crisis has only worsened.
This time, the government has announced to reduce load shedding within a year and ending it in the next two years by importing electricity from India.
The energy ministry, in the work plan, has claimed that load shedding will end within three years, projecting the demand for electricity at around 1,837 MW and the supply at around 2,300 MW after three years.
After ending load shedding, the work plan aims to develop the hydropower sector in next seven years.
Moreover, the work plan has projected that the demand for electricity will be at around 10,000 Megawatts after 10 years, and has announced incentives to private investor s to meet the demand.
