KATHMANDU, Nov 13: The government has decided to recall Nepali ambassador to South Africa Amrit Rai. Sources in the government said he is being recalled some three months before his term expires in order to give him a new diplomatic assignment as Nepal’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in New York. A cabinet meeting held on Sunday evening took the decision to this effect.
The decision, however, has brought serious dissatisfaction within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) as the decision is widely seen as a move to reward those loyal to the ruling party instead of giving equal opportunity to all officers serving in the ministry. The MoFA has a tradition to send senior officials to new diplomatic assignment after serving in the ministry for certain period of time upon their return home from their previous assignment abroad.
