KATHMANDU, Dec 27: Minister for Health and Population Umakanta Chaudhary on Sunday confirmed the first swine flu death in the country. [break]

"I have been told by the officials that a person has died of swine flu and I have instructed the officials to look into every details of the case," Chaudhary told myrepublica.com.

Secretary at the Ministry Dr Praveen Mishra identified the victim as a 37-year-old woman from Bhaktapur, who succumbed to the disease a few days ago at Bir Hospital. "The details will be revealed tomorrow (Monday)," he said.

The ministry had announced a US-based non-resident Nepali couple and their son as the first persons to be diagnosed with the pandemic H1N1 2009 virus, otherwise known as swine flu, on June 29.

The ministry on October 15 had declared that the virus had appeared among the masses after they found the virus in persons who had no history of travel and had not come into contact with a confirmed patient.
