KATHMANDU, July 2: Finance Minister  Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat has said that the imports of vegetables and fruits will be discouraged to promote small producers within the country.

In his address to the members of parliament during a meeting of the House of Representatives on Sunday, the finance minister said that the government was serious about the reports of influence of middlemen in the supply chain of domestic products.

This has prevented the farmers from getting appropriate prices for their produce, said Minister Mahat while responding to the concerns raised during the deliberations on the Finance Bill-2080 BS in the House of Representatives.  He made it clear that the transportation of vegetables and fruits produced by small farmers to the market will be exempted of VAT.

"The policy of promoting small-scale fruits and vegetable productions is to encourage small farmers," he said.

The budget has also envisaged the concept of promoting domestic tourism by imposing tax for Nepalis going abroad on tourist visas, the minister added.
