Govt action plan for reconstruction of damaged heritages

KATHMANDU, May 17: The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has come up with an action plan for the protection and reconstruction of heritages damaged by the recent devastating earthquake that rocked the country on April 25 with several aftershocks.

At a meeting held at Singha Durbar on Sunday to discuss the earthquake-caused damages to heritages of archeological importance and future plans for their refurbishments, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Deepak Chandra Amatya shared that the ministry had prepared a three phase - short-term, middle-term and long-term plans for the protection of damaged heritages. The meeting was arranged by the International Relations and Labor Committee of the Legislature-Parliament.


The UNESCO and interested people, business community at home and abroad will be requested for help for the implementation of action plans.

On the occasion, Committee Chairperson Prabhu Shah underlined the need of collecting complete details of damages to cultural heritages caused by the recent quake and intensifying a search operation for the missing objects. Experts' feedbacks are necessary in carrying out reconstruction works, he added.

Lawmaker Naryanman Bijukchhe said historic and ancient form of heritages should be maintained while reconstructing the damaged monuments.

Of 581 heritages in the country, 137 were completely damaged and 444 suffered partial damages in the earthquake, as stated by the Department of Archeology. RSS
