KATHMANDU, Jan 14: The total merchandise import increased by 59.5 percent to Rs 838.41 billion in the first five months of the current Fiscal Year 2021/22.

Such imports had decreased by 9.6 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year. According to a report released by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the import of goods from India, China and other countries increased by 44.6 percent, 57.8 percent and 111.2 percent, respectively.

The imports of petroleum products, crude palm oil, medicines, means of transport and spare parts, crude soybean oil and other commodities have increased. On the other hand, the import of pulses, cement, pesticides, tobacco and other commodities declined during the review period.

The total trade deficit increased by 54.7 percent to Rs 7.35 billion in the first five months of the current fiscal year. Such a deficit had decreased by 10.9 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year. The export-import ratio reached 12.3 percent during the review period. Such a ratio was 9.5 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year.
