Give due priority to LDCs concerns: PM Bhattarai

KATHMANDU, June 21: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has stressed on integration of economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development to address development challenges facing the world, in particular the least developed countries (LDCs).



In his speech at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, the PM emphasized that the outcome of the Rio+20 conference should provide enhanced financial resources including ODA to support the sustainable development efforts of LDCs. [break]



Stating that LDCs are naturally a key stakeholder of the conference, he said the LDCs’ concerns and aspirations in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication should get a due priority.



Likewise, Bhattarai described green economy as new development opportunities and called for reforms in entities within the United Nations system that strongly support LDCs´ sustainable development agenda.



Stating that Nepal is one of the mountainous countries most prone to effects of climate change, the PM called for global commitment to promote sustainable mountain agenda.



Bhattarai also shared his optimism with world leaders that Nepal would embark on rapid and sustainable economic development and called for collective action with right implementation measures to address global development challenges.



Bhattarai had left for Brazil on Monday, leading a 21-member Nepali delegation to the UN conference, amid stiff protest from opposition parties.
