KATHMANDU, Jan 23: Trucks started collecting garbage from Kathmandu and dumping the garbage at the Sisdol landfill site in Okharpauwa on Friday morning after 17 days of obstruction by locals of Okharpauwa.

According to Devendra Pokharel of the Environment Division of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, 50 trips of garbage had been dumped at the landfill site by trucks by Friday noon.

“It should take at least one week to clean up the garbage from the streets of Kathmandu Valley,” Pokharel said.

The locals of Okharpauwa allowed the trucks to dump the waste at the Sisdol landfill site after the Ministry of Local Development signed a 10-point agreement with them on Thursday evening.

Among other things, the Ministry of Local Development has agreed to set up a local development fund to undertake development initiatives in the Okharpauwa area, which was the main demand of the locals.
