During his speech at the International Maithili Conference held in the capital, Dahal said that the development of the Maithili language would help take Nepal-India relations to new heights.
He said that the Maithili language was a “historic and prosperous” language and also said that the conference was a useful step in restructuring Nepal’s future federation along linguistic lines. “We are in a process of restructuring autonomous states along linguistic lines,” he said. “And as a leader of the party that fought against the hegemony of the Khas language, I feel extremely blessed to be here at this conference.”
Dahal said the forming of states in Nepal on the basis of languages spoken in the various areas would inspire neighboring India to establish its states on the same basis. “I welcome the concern raised by the Maithili leader from India who recently said that Nepal’s decision to form states on the basis of language would make it easy for them to follow suit,” said Dahal.
The two-day conference, attended by Maithili language litterateurs and leaders from Nepal and India, is set to conclude on Sunday.
