“If you have strong determination and self-confidence, you can excel in whatever career you choose to pursue,” says Raj Kumar Bhattarai, President of Advertising Association of Nepal (AAN).

Being a Science student who did his Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Statistics and Mathematics and chose Statistics for his Masters studies, it is a matter of curiosity for everyone how Bhattarai ended up being involved in the field of advertising which is completely different from what he has studied.[break]

Recalling how he chose to open up an advertising agency while doing his Masters in Statistics, Bhattarai shares, “It was when we had to do an assignment on analyzing advertising data for Statistics, my friends found advertising a new arena to explore. Sitting on a ground of Tribhuvan University at Kirtipur in January 1993, enjoying peanuts in the cold winter, we came up with an idea of registering an advertising agency and doing something on our own.”

Bhattarai was very excited to start up something on his own and prepared the entire documents required to register the agency but his friends did not turn up while registering the agency. It was then Bhattarai decided that one should be ready to take up the challenges alone and then asked for financial help from his father Dhanapati Bhattarai to start up his own business.

“I’m very grateful to my father for his encouragement and financial assistance to do something on my own while I was still a student, even though advertising was totally different from what I was studying,” said Bhattarai.

There has been no looking back since then, and Bhattarai registered an agency called Spectrum Advertising and Media Consultant in April 1994.

“Though I was totally lured by advertising profession and left my Masters studies in between, I have no regrets as I’m very happy in the filed I choose to work for,” said he.

However, Bhattarai also said that it was not that easy to begin, as he had never studied advertising and marketing.

“In order to learn more about the field, I bought books related to the subject and studied them for months before I started exploring the business for my agency,” shares Bhattarai.

‘As my first project, I designed the concept for a paper advertisement of Hetauda Iron and the company loved my idea. It was after that, I started enjoying the field I chose, as it’s a very creative field,” reiterates Bhattarai.

“I never felt that advertising wasn’t my field, rather my passion for advertising grew day by day,” says Bhattarai happily.

A person with a strong determination and a will to succeed, Bhattarai, based on his experiences, adds, “Education isn’t only for getting a job and working for others.

Education helps us build up self-confidence and also create employment on our own and for others. If you have strong determination to achieve something in life, you won’t have to depend on others.”
