KATHMANDU, Oct 9: The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday published the lists of candidates who have filed to contest under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system in the Constituent Assembly (CA) election scheduled for November 19.

EC Spokesperson Bir Bahadur Rai said the lists of FPTP candidates were published at the offices of all 240 returning officers across the country.

The offices published the lists of FPTP candidates a day after the EC asked the candidates wishing to withdraw to do so. [break]

According to preliminary data, 196 candidates under the FPTP electoral system have withdrawn their candidacies.

With the withdrawal of FPTP 196 candidates, the total number of candidates now stands at 6,147.

Though the EC was expected to make available the final lists of candidates under FPTP on Wednesday, it could not do so.

“We could not make the final figures available today [Wednesday] as four or five districts were not able to forward exact figures to the EC,” Rai told Republica Wednesday evening.

Altogether 6,343 FPTP candidates, excluding 11 disqualified, had filed their candidacies on Thursday for the upcoming CA polls. Out of the 6,343 candidates, 672 were women and one a third gender.

Similarly, 1,219 independent candidates had filed candidacy, including 69 women.

Altogether 2,782 candidates filed their candidacies in the Central Development Region, 1,527 filed in the Eastern Development Region, 1,057 in the Western Development Region, 589 in Mid-western Development Region and 388 candidates in the Far-western Development Region.

Four political parties--Sanghiya Bikaswadi Party, Nepal Ganatantrik Ekata Party, Naya Sanghiyata Janadharana Party and Nepal Janahit Party-- have not filed any candidacies under FPTP.

The EC is scheduled to allocate election symbols to all FPTP candidates on Thursday.

Talking to Republica, Election Commissioner Dolakh Bahadur Gurung said the EC will begin printing the ballot papers for the FPTP electoral system from Friday.

“We took a decision in principle to print the ballot papers for the FPTP electoral system today [Wednesday] and will forward the decision to Janak Education Materials Centre (JEMC) on Friday,” added Gurung.

He stated that JEMC would begin printing the FPTP ballot papers from Friday evening.

JEMC will print 15 million ballot papers for voting under the FPTP electoral system also. The state-owned JEMC is publishing 15 million ballot papers for the proportional electoral system.
