GAUSHALA, July 27: A total of 4,571 houses have been completely damaged by floods in Mahottari.
Likewise, 7,963 houses suffered partial and 5,847 minor damage due to floods triggered by the monsoon rainfall, according to the District Natural Calamity Relief Committee.
Furthermore, paddy cultivated in 150 hectares, maize in 20 hectares and green vegetables in 50 hectares were damaged. The total damage incurred to vegetation including paddy, cash crops and to poultry is worth Rs. 50 billion. Matihari, Jaleswar, Balawa, Loharpatti, Bhangaha municipalities and Ekdara, Mahottari and Pipara rural municipalities were severely affected by floods.
Many fish ponds have been inundated while poultry and poultry feed were damaged. Nearly, 5,000 farmers have been directly affected and they have called for relief support from the government including waiving of agriculture loan and free seeds, among others.
In addition to this, nearly 40 villages in Leuri of Balawa municipality, Jaleswor municipality, Matihani municipality and Loharpatti municipality have been inundated by floodwater from the Rato, Maraha, Bigni and Jangwa rivers. A total of around 200,000 people have been affected.
