KATHMANDU, Feb 16: Bekha Ratna Shakya, the former mayor of Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City, passed away on Sunday.
He was 89. Shakya died while undergoing treatment at Mediciti Hospital in Lalitpur. He was a district leader of Nepali Congress (NC).
In a press release issued by the NC headquarters, President Sher Bahadur Deuba expressed sorrow on the demise of its district leader and freedom fighter. Deuba also lauded Shakya's contribution to the Nepali Congress party and country's various democratic movements time and again.

"I would like to pay tribute to late Shakya and express condolence to the bereaved family members at this hour of tragedy," the party president stated in the press release.
Shakya served as the district president of Nepal Freedom Fighters Association. He also became the central chairperson of the Municipal Association of Nepal.
