Former amnesty recipient arrested for kidnapping and issuing death threats

BHARATPUR, Nov 1: A person who was granted amnesty by the president has been arrested  by the police on charges of kidnapping and making death threats and demanding a ransom of Rs 2.5 million.

Fifty-five-year-old Ram Chandra Thapa was arrested by the police from Bharatpur Metropolitan City-1 on October 25. He had threatened to kill Somraj Subedi. He was arrested while he was demanding the ransom amount from the victim’s family at Malpot Chowk in Bharatpur. Thapa was granted amnesty on May 29 on the occasion of Republic Day.

The Chitwan Police recently held a press conference to publicly disclose the arrest of Thapa, who had made repeated threatening calls from an unidentified mobile number. He had threatened to harm and kill Subedi and his son, and demanded a ransom of Rs 2.5 million. A special team of police led by Inspector Uma Shankar Prasad Shah arrested Thapa last Wednesday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Bijay Raj Pandit revealed that Thapa, originally from Makwanpur’s Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City, currently resides in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-9.

According to the Chitwan Police, Thapa has a history of criminal activities, including theft-related offenses, robbery, and drug-related offenses. He had previously been sentenced to nine years in prison for a robbery case by the Chitwan District Court.

Following his release after serving four years in jail, he was granted amnesty by the government on Republic Day on May 29.
