KATHMANDU, Dec 1: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa left for three-day India visit on Monday with a plan to hold meetings with Indian leaders and officials.

"During his visit, he will be meeting important personalities including leaders, politicians as well as other distinguished persons from different walks of life," said a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

He has left for New Delhi at a time when people across the country have been facing a serious crisis due to the economic blockade in Nepal.

Fuels, medicines and other essential goods that used to come only from Indian market are in acute shortage for over two months now.

Senior officials at the foreign ministry said it would be too early to comment about the outcome of his visit as "things are still sketchy at present". They expected to get some indications in a day or two.

Sources close to Thapa, however, said informal talks between the deputy prime minister and Indian Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj over telephome and various other channels have been taking place regularly in the recent days.

"He left for New Delhi today as they felt the need for talks face to face," said a source close to Thapa.

Thapa is also meeting spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and many believe that the minister may rely on the influence of spiritual leaders like Shankar to arrange a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Within days after he assumed office at the ministry, Thapa in October had visited India and met with Indian Prime Minister Modi and key ministers including Home Minister Rajnath Singh and External Minister Swaraj.

Though Thapa upon his arrival in Kathmandu had expressed hope that India would ease supply of essential goods to Nepal, it has not happened so far.

The miniter on Friday held an interaction with former foreign ministers, retired foreign secretaries and former Nepali ambassadors and sought their suggestions for settling the ongoing crisis and improving relations with India.

Most of them had suggested the minister to make more efforts for understanding the key concerns of the southern neighbor.
