FNJ condemns attack against journalists

KATHMANDU, Sept 1: Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed concern over the attack on press and journalists at various places across the country by the people who are against the proposed delineations of federal provinces.

During the banda called by Sanghiya (Federal) Limbuwan Party Nepal in eastern Nepal, former president of FNJ Jhapa chapter, Krishna Humagain, was attacked by banda organizers on Tuesday, read a statement issued by the FNJ.Humagain, an editor of a local daily newspaper, Arjundhara, was thrashed while he was trying to show his press card to the protesters. The FNJ condemned the attack against Humagain, who has sustained serious injuries.

On Monday, the cadres of Samyukta Madhesi Morcha vandalized vehicles owned by Makalu Television and Himalaya Times in Biratnagar. Meanwhile, the police manhandled journalist Jagat Rai in Birgunj while he was covering the clash between the agitators and security personnel.

"The cadres of agitating party and security personnel both have tried to stifle press freedom at a time when media is supposed to play a vital role for establishing social harmony," read the FNJ statement.

The umbrella organization for journalists, the FNJ has urged reporters to avoid disseminating provocative contents that could further deepen the gap between communities.

The FNJ has also demanded the government to carry out probes into the attack on the press and bring the guilty to book.
