While addressing a program entitled “Innovative Approaches to Unity and Peace in Asia” organized by South Asia Peace Initiative (SAPI) in the capital on Tuesday, Koirala said, “As the new constitution has to accommodate the aspirations and demands of different sections of society, I have no doubt that we need innovative approach toward this end.”
Stressing on some fundamental principles that have to be incorporated in the new constitution, Koirala said, “The new constitution has to incorporate some fundamental principles like pluralism, federalism, republicanism, human rights and the rule of law, while safeguarding the country´s unity and integrity and also promoting harmony and fraternity among different sections of population at the same time.”
The foreign minister further said, "The government is keen to consolidate further understanding, cooperation and broad consensus among major political parties for undertaking common endeavors toward the peace process, constitution-making and providing relief to the people."
The participants at the function, which was attended by representatives of 15 countries including Indian, Thai, Pakistani and Sri Lankan ambassadors to Nepal, pointed at the need for collaboration at both the government level and non-government level to address common problems in South Asia like poverty, rising corruption and human trafficking.
President of SAPI and a member of Constituent Assembly, Eknath Dahal, said, “SAPI has said that politics of consensus is the best solution to the present problem facing the country.”
SAPI has also recommended bringing China, Iran, Afghanistan and some other nations into SAARC, thereby extending its network to make this body more “interactive and participatory,” Dahal said.
SAPI is also working on a paper to be presented to CA Constitution-Drafting Committee.
Let’s live in peace and embrace diversity
