Speaking at an interaction on budget for fiscal year 2010/11 in Birgunj, Minister Pandey informed that of the total development budget of Rs 103 billion from external sources, only 50 percent of grant and 70 percent of loan have been spent so far. [break]
“We are facing problem in spending budget sourced from donors as the existing provisions allow us to spend foreign assistance only if we become successful in spending budget allocated from internal sources,” said Pandey. He also urged the business community to think about contributing to the nation instead of focusing only on profit making.
“Profit is never greater than the entire nation, as none of us will be spared if the nation plunges into crisis,” Pandey said. Stating that business people and the government are two sides of the same coin, he urged the business community to cooperate with the government in collecting more revenue for nation development.
Speaking on the occasion, Finance Secretary Rameshwar Khanal informed that total capacity of the country to pay for total imports has dropped to 15 percent from 68 percent recorded seven years back. He also said the government was serious about boosting exports at a time when the Balance of Payment is squeezing.
Revenue Secretary Krishna Hari Baskota informed that total revenue collection in the current fiscal year so far has touched to Rs 145 billion.
The government has set a target of collecting Rs 177 billion in revenue during the current fiscal year.
Ganesh Lath, former president of Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, demanded the government to improve the road linking dry port with Pathlaiya, extend railway from Raxaul to Amalekhgunj, construct special economic zone and expedite construction of Kathmandu-Tarai road.
