FM asked banks to focus on rural areas

KATHMANDU, Jan 5: Finance Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has urged commercial banks to lower their investments on unproductive sectors and focus more toward productive sectors and rural areas.



However, the bankers asked the finance minister to ensure enough security to enable banks invest in the rural areas.



In an interaction program organized by the Ministry of Finance, Dr Bhattarai told chief executive officers of twenty commercial banks present at the program that they need to lessen their exposures on unproductive sectors.



According to Radesh Pant, president of Nepal Bankers´ Association, the bankers on the occasion complained with the finance minister that rising security, deepening power crisis and growing unhealthy competition among the financial institutions due to their excess numbers are the major constrains to expand banking services to rural areas.



Responding to the concerns raised by the bankers, finance minister said almost all the issues raised by the banker are country´s major problems, but assured the them that he will do his best the solve the problems.
