MAHOTTARI, July 8: Floods in two big rivers in Mahottari have inundated around half a dozen of government offices and thousands of bighas of land here at a time when long drought has affected crops in other parts of the district.

The flood in Rato River inundated settlements, government offices, seedlings and vegetable crops in hundreds of bighas of land Wednesday. Similarly, flood in Bighi River, inundated paddy seedlings, chilly and other vegetable crops in thousands of bighas of the land in Pipara, Pigauna, Parsa, Atradh, Sirsiya, Lochana, Simardahi, Bahuarba and Matihani VDCs of the district, according to District Agriculture Development Office.

The office said the flood in Bighi river destroyed crops worth millions of rupees in thousands of hectares of land in a dozen of VDCs east of Jaleshwar.

As both the rivers are shallow, even a small flood in the river triggered by normal rainfall in the upstream makes its way into human settlements and farmlands causing heavy losses.

While 95 percent of land remains uncultivated due to the lack of rainfall, the inundation of seedlings due to the floods in the two rivers has put the farmers here at the receiving end.
