The deceased have been identified as Indra Kala Thapa, 21, Bali Thapa, 66, Pabitra Thapa, 40, Bijuli Thapa, 30, and Harikala Thapa, 37, of Resh-3. Baglung Police said a mound of soil fell from above when they were repairing Dohote canal near Sankhu river of Resh VDC. [break]
“Four of them died on the spot after a mass of soil suddenly fell over them. One died while being taken to hospital,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Uma Prasad Chaturbedi.
Sushma Thapa, Mani Thapa, Krishna Thapa, Nari Thapa, Jhuma Thapa, Ujeli Thapa, Kalpana Thapa and Maya Thapa of the same village were injured in the incident. “We all were working on the canal when the accident happened. We tried to run but couldn´t escape,” Mani Thapa said.
Six of the injured women are being treated at Dhaulagiri Zonal Hospital in Baglung while the other two have been referred to Pokhara for further treatment, according to Dr Tarun Poudel at the hospital.
The people from surrounding villages were taking turns for repairing the canal for the past four days and on Thursday it was the turn of Peepal Danda and Upaldhara of Resh-3.
