Fire in Bhutanese refugee camp kills one

KATHMANDU, Jan 12: At least one person was killed when fire gutted a human settlement in the Bhutanese refugee camp in Jhapa on Monday evening.

KATHMANDU, Jan 12: At least one person was killed when fire gutted a human settlement in the Bhutanese refugee camp in Jhapa on Monday evening.


According to the District Police Office (DPO), Jhapa, Deshman Rai, who had paralysis, was burnt to death as he could not escape his home. Rai was a Bhutanese refugee.

The fire has destroyed property worth Rs 800,000, according to the preliminary estimation made by police.


The fire was brought under control jointly by locals, Nepal Police personnel, Armed Police Force personnel and Damak Municipality at around 8:15 PM.


The dead body has been sent to Damak Hospital for post-mortem.


Further investigation into the cause of the fire outbreak is currently underway, according to a press statement issued by DPO, Jhapa.
