DANG, Dec 13: Only 32 students have enrolled this year for the proficiency certificate level (PCL) at Mahendra Multiple Campus, which previously used to admit up to 1,700 students.

SLC graduates here have not opted for PCL as they became confused after Tribhuvan University (TU) announced its decision to phase out the program. But after student unions protested, TU backed away from its decision, saying it would only implement it from next session only. [break]

"The decision came too late," said Assistant Campus Chief Kishor Pokharel. One repercussion of the low enrollment is that teachers are less interested in the classroom. All 32 students enrolling for the program have done so under the Humanities faculty. The faculty of Management did not find a single student this year.

Low enrollment for PCL has been a regular phenomenon at this college over the past few years. It had only 500 students last year and 700 the year before. Besides the uncertainty surrounding PCL, another reason behind this state of affairs is that the program has failed to come up with new and timely subjects.

"Either the government has to update the program as per the aspirations of the newer generation or seek an alternative," said Pokharel.

The master´s degree program being run at the campus since a few years back is facing the same woe. Only five students are enrolled for it this year, down from up to 40 students in the past. Pokharel said that the campus has found it difficult to continue running the program owing to lack of students and resources. "Now we cannot really move ahead with it," he added.

The campus has been running master´s programs in English and Political Science. The District Development Committee helped it operate the program till last year. The campus has not yet been able to start classes for the five students though half the session is already over as per the academic calendar.
