MANCHESTER, May 17: Sir Alex Ferguson celebrated equaling Liverpool´s record of 18 English titles by setting his players the target of going past their biggest rivals at the first opportunity next season. [break]

A goalless draw with Arsenal on Saturday was enough to wrap up the 11th Premier League title of Ferguson´s reign at Old Trafford and the Scot made it clear that he was far from finished.

"It was the longest 90 minutes in history but we got there," the 67-year-old said after what was an edgy display by his side. "There´s not been one save in the match and that tells you how cautious a match it was."

Asked what it meant to match Liverpool´s mark of 18 titles, Ferguson replied: "It will make it more special if we get in front of them. We want to progress with this team, which is capable of doing it.

"It is a young team and next year we are going to go for it again."

Ferguson famously set himself the target of knocking Liverpool off their perch when he moved from Aberdeen to United in 1986.

"That was the target because they were the greatest side in the land at the time," he recalled. "But I never through I could get 11 titles, never in a million years. My main aim was to win the first one and of course we progressed so fast after that."

Ferguson went on to scotch any suggestion that he could be tempted to call time on his illustrious career at the end of a season which, if United win the Champions League final against Barcelona at the end of the month, could yield an unprecedented haul of four trophies.

"I am not contemplating it (retirement)," Ferguson said. "I am definitely not contemplating it. I am going to carry on and my health will tell me when to quit."

Ferguson admitted Liverpool had been formidable opponents who had put his side under severe pressure after winning 4-1 at Old Trafford in March.

"They have done well," Ferguson said. They had a period when they won 4-1 here. That was a travesty of a result, because it was never a 4-1 result. But they great impetus from that and we didn´t recover, we lost the next game (at Fulham).

"That gave Liverpool the scent and, credit to them, they took it and they battled away."

Although it was United´s recovery from their March blip that ultimately carried them over the winning line, Ferguson felt the key moment of the campaign came on December 26th, when Carlos Tevez snatched a late winner at Stoke.

It was a win United scarcely deserved after a weary performance in the aftermath of the club´s return from the Club World Cup in Japan.

"Winning that game late on, after coming back from Japan was a big challenge for us, a big test and we came through it," Ferguson recalled. "It was a great result for us."
