Chandra Prasad Adhikari of Sripur village at Fulbari-3 served only organic food during the wedding party of his son on Monday.
“I could have chosen not to throw a party. But I thought it was a great opportunity to let people taste organic food,” he said.
During the marriage on Monday, family members and relatives of the bride and groom gathered in one place, got to know each other, and partook in organic food. There was no traditional marriage fire (jagge) lit for the marriage, and nor did the bride´s side shower the groom with gifts.
The participants were served organic rice, radish, green pea, kidney bean and green leaves, all produced in Adhikari´s farm. The vegetable was cooked in sunflower oil, also produced in Adhikari´s farm. The vegetable menu did not include potato or cauliflower, which are common in almost all wedding parties.
But it was not a vegetarian party. Meat of goats raised by the family was also served.
“Only salt and spices were bought from the market,” said Adhikari with pride.
In the invitation cards sent to the invitees, Adhikari had invited them to participate in an “organic party”.
Adhikari sent invitations to all 200 households of Sripur to the party. He believes the participation served a good chance for awareness among the people about the health benefits of organic food.
Adhikari has been producing organic food for two decades now. Sripur village is famous for organic produce. A total of 121 of the 200 households here are associated with a Organic Agricultural Producers´ Cooperative.
