POKHARA, July 1: Locals in Pokhara earlier had no option but to throw away their plastic bottles from mineral water and cold drinks as they had no recycle value. But now they have good reason to hang on to them as a recently established plastic factory has decided to collect the used bottles from house to house and also pay for them. [break]

Himalayan Life Plastic Industry, which came into operation Sunday, is going to collect the used plastic bottles and recycle them into other plastic items.

“Now, locals need not discard their plastic bottles haphazardly. We will buy them up,” said Daniel Burgi, proprietor of the plastic factory. The factory is buying plastic bottles at Rs. 1 per kg.

He added that the factory will recycle the purchased plastic bottles and produce raw material for other plastic products such as tents, packaging material and other objects.

“We just want to make right use of the plastic bottles. Our initiative will also help keep the environment clean,” he said.

To recycle the plastic bottles, the factory has installed machinery imported from China.

The factory established at an investment of Rs. 50 million has set up a buying center for used plastic bottles at local Prithivi Chowk bus park. “Anyone can come to the centre and sell us their plastic bottles,” said Burgi.

The factory has also distributed plastic bottle collection bags to hotels, restaurants, schols, colleges and hospitals in Pokhara.

“We are planning to collect plastic bottles from other parts of the country also. We will also set up buying centers at others localities in Pokhara,” Burgi added.

The factory has already collected around 50 tons of plastic bottles from Pokhara. Burgi said the factory will produce plastic chips from the bottles and later export them to China and India

Earlier, only glass bottles used to sell and plastic bottles only took up space in the house, said Chau Bahdaur Gurung, member of the Restaurant and Bar Association Nepal, adding “From now onwards, we will not have to worry about what to do with the plastic bottles.”

Jhalak Ram Adhikari, an official at Pokhara Sub-metropolitan Office, said plastic bottles will no longer be an environmental headache.
