Security personnel defused the bomb placed at the compound of Dr Rajendra Prasad Shah, reportedly by an underground armed group after he failed to pay the amount of money demanded of him. [break]
"The bomb was defused, but the crucial question is who would defuse the terror etched in their minds," said Dr Roshan Ali, Secretary of Narayani Medical Association.
"Nobody should disturb us. We are public property and should be entitled to peace of mind to serve the people," he added.
According to Dr Ali, a silent rally is to be taken out on Monday, requesting all concerned to make ensure the safety of medical practitioners. "We hope our public appeal would be heard and taken well," he said.
Another physician, Dr Ranabir Singh, said gone are the days when doctors would be gifted with flowers and overwhelmed with appreciation and gratefulness for successful treatment of patients. "We instead come across a bomb at our doorstep," he said. "The doctors are themselves a frightened lot, contrary to their image of emboldening patients to combat disease."
Dr Rajendra Prasad Shah now does not even receive phone calls at his residence, according to one of his friends. "An underground group demanded one million rupees on Wednesday. The very next day there was the bomb at his house," he added.
After the bomb-planting incident at the doctor´s house, over 130 doctors working at private and public hospitals here and their families have become anxious over their security, Ali said.
