Muna Madan by Laxmi Prasad Devkota is an epic in Nepali literature that remains my favorite among many. The plot of the poem where Madan leaves home to make money and later dies is poignant in every way.

Ma sanga kehi nabhaye pani bachne icchya thiyo. Tyesai sanga jodiyeko alikati bichar, bhawana, chahana je thiyo ma hunuko artha thiyo arthat manche hunako yauta mahasatya.

In Jeewan Kada ki Phool by Jhamak Ghimire

This work by Madan Puraskar winner Ghimire is inspiring in every way. I came across this book right after it was published and was quite drawn to read it as I had heard good reviews of it as well. I found the story so spellbinding that I almost finished it in one reading.[break]

Dipesh Shrestha

The autobiography clearly depicts the struggle and life of pain that the novelist endured throughout her journey. She’s a differently-abled person not just physically but because she’s gifted with the talent to express, she has proven to be an excellent writer. The words flow in the book in such a beautiful way and some of the parts are so poignant that it moved me and left me pondering for days.

Overcoming her physical challenges, it’s stirring how the writer has achieved a respectable position in Nepali literature.

Despite all the odds, the way she has expressed her desire to live and fight is inspiring. Being humans, we all are restricted by our limitations. But until we realize our worth and move forward with that motivation, nothing can be achieved in life. It’s important not to prove to the world but to yourself, so that at the end of the day, you realize who you are and not what the society wants you to be or thinks of as.

I could relate to his book so much as I always knew that there’s a hidden talent in me which I couldn’t express due to the fear of how I would be acknowledged. It’s also because of the way I was brought up, as singing wasn’t considered quite a respectable thing to do in my family. B ut I pursued my choice and followed my heart and got positive response and support, even from my closed ones. So this book has been a guiding light to me and no matter how much I praise Ghimire and her spirit, it will still be less.

The fact that everything in this book is real is totally awe-inspiring and I recommend it for everyone to at least read it once. Though it’s been a long time since I read this book, it still inspires me to move ahead and face all kinds of challenges that may come my way.

About Thapa

A lyricist and professional singer, Thapa’s career in music hadn’t always been smooth. Brought up in Gulmi, she was discouraged to sing, and even as a child she used to hide and find ways where she could be on her own to express herself by singing.

She was married off at an early age and was bound by responsibilities. She came to Kathmandu in 1994. Her son then discovered her diary full of lyrics and encouraged her to pursue singing.

“All the credits go to my son and that’s how I produced my music album,” she says. Till date, she has four music albums to her credit, such as “Maaya Prapti Haina,” and “Aradhana Bhakti Geet.” which includes her songs sung by professional singers.

“I was born in a village and there was no environment where I could continue writing. Only in later years, I gained confidence to express myself,” she says. She is also the proprietor of Shiva Darshan Digital

Company, a music production company.

“I felt like a caged bird who is now free and that I can win the world. I feel that music and art are the only way to express and feel others’ pain as well,” she adds.

Thapa’s five picks

Chakrbyuhama ChandraSurya by Sarojraj Adhikari

I recently have started reading this book which touches topics like how those in power suppress the powerless. The writer does justice to the ideas and subjects that he has chosen to write because it’s very convincing. I really liked the writing style as well, and the flow is fascinating and interesting.

Pratishodh by Taslima Nasreen

Nasreen is a controversial writer for dealing with subjects and writing against Islamic philosophy. But I appreciate the writer a lot for taking up a stand and voicing the opinions of many other Muslim women who are suppressed. Women aren’t men’s slaves but should be able to stand on their own and that’s exactly what she has tried to show through her writing.

Antarmanko Yatra by Jagadish Ghimire

The writer is a recipient of Madan Puraskar. The book and the writing style of Ghimire are commendable. The book shows the journey of how Ghimire became a writer and the challenges he faced. He has raised many questions which makes us contemplate. I read the book a long time back and it’s my favorite.

Dosro Pakshya by Taslima Nasreen

This is the second part of Pratishodh. Being a woman, I can really relate to the kind of subjects that Nasreen tries to bring out. It sort of creates awareness and motivates one to speak for what’s right, as the writer strongly supports women’s rights. I hardly get to keep books by her, though, as we keep circulating her books among my friends.

Muna Madan by Laxmi Prasad Devkota

This is an epic in Nepali literature that remains my favorite among many. The plot of the poem where Madan leaves home to make money and later dies is poignant in every way. It not only shows the story of Madam but it’s also a story of every common man who struggles to live a decent life but due to poverty is helpless. No matter how many books I may read, this will forever be my most favorite.

As told to Nistha Rayamajhi.
