KATHMANDU, Dec 24: Artist Rupak Rai’s paintings are on exhibition at Classic Gallery, Chakupat, Lalitpur. The exhibition kicked off on Friday. It features a variety of artworks including paintings and prints. Rai has used various medium to create the paintings. His love for people and place inspired him to paint. The paintings are based in his he his day to day observations.
This is Rai’s first solo exhibition. His paintings feature portraits of people doing their jobs, people waiting for bus, portraits of different personalities like Lain Singh Bangdel and more. Likewise, he has also created paintings of Bouddhanath, Prayer wheels, and bells using watercolor, pen and ink and acrylic. He also has used techniques like wood cut and etching to create prints.
Falling in Love
Talking about the title of the exhibition Rai said, “I am still exploring my form of artwork. In this exhibition, I have showcased people and places that strike me during my daily travel. My paintings have become a medium to showcase my expression.”
In one of the featured paintings, there is a man with his Sarangi. There are portraits of different singers and cassettes in the background. Rai explained that the paintinmg is his tribute to ‘Gaine’ (a person who plays the Sarangi). He lamented that they do not get fame and money like commercial musicians despite their excellent and authentic skills.
