KATHMANDU, April 12: Former king Gyanendra Shah has accused the present political leadership of misusing the state mechanisms for personal benefit and weakening the state.

Issuing a statement on the eve of the Nepali New Year 2073, the former monarch said that the Nepali state has been weakened as the present rulers are engaged in misusing state mechanisms for personal benefit. He said the current leadership has the tendencies of the mythical Hindu saint Agasti who swallowed up the oceans but still longed for more.

The former king stressed the need for encouraging all nation-loving and patriotic forces to safeguard nationalism and freedom.

Urging all citizens to love the country, he said in his statement, "First look to your own country, before looking at the world. First know your own country before trying to know the rest of the world."

He said that the question of handing over our legacy and values to the new generation has become an important issue and that the political classes should bear in mind the geo-political sensitivities and power balance of South Asia.
