GORKHA, Jan 6: District Disaster Relief Committee (DDRC) of Gorkha has gifted a modern power generator provided by the Chinese government for earthquake victims in Gorkha district to ex-Indian army board in the district.
China quake-aid generator lights up ex-Indian army board
The power generator that costs over Rs 150,000 has now been installed at the office of the former Indian Army's board at Laxmibazaar, which is four kilometers away from the district headquarters of Gorkha. But displaced and homeless quake-affected people are still living in difficulty and in darkness under temporary shelters.
After smaller hydropower projects were damaged by the earthquake, some quake-hit villages have yet to see electricity supply restored.
Earlier, just a month after the earthquake, the Chinese government had donated the power generator for the quake victims as relief. Two out of 10 power generators provided by China have been kept at the District Development Committee since the last seven months. Six are being used by district-based government offices including the Chief District Officer's residence, District Police Office, Palungtar Municipality, Survey Office and Land Revenue Office.
Although the DDRC after receiving a request from the ex-Indian army board, had provided the generator to the board to ensure smooth distribution of pensions, the DDRC has now decided not to take it back, said a member of the DDRC requesting anonymity.
