KATHMANDU, Dec 6: WWF Climate Ambassadors Appa Sherpa and Dawa Sherpa presented a rock piece from the summit of Mount Everest to Austrian President Heinz Fischer on Saturday, in a bid to gather Austrian support to Nepal´s agenda on melting Himalayas due to Climate Change.

They also presented a letter from Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to Fischer. In a press release issued on Sunday, WWF-Austria said the rock piece "is a reminder to rich industrial nations like Austria, to urgently reduce their CO2 emissions."

The release quoted Andreas Wurzer, deputy CEO of WWF Austria, as saying, "The industrialized nations are the main perpetrators of climate change. It is therefore urgent that Austria also took responsibility of CO2 reductions at national level and extended financial support for adaptation measures to the developing countries that suffer most from the consequences of climate change."

The two summitteers visited the Austrian president as part of the European Expedition under WWF Nepal´s Climate for Life Campaign, an initiative to raise the profile of the Himalayas in the global climate debate. As part of the Expedition, the Sherpas will travel across 10 European cities taking their message of the melting Himalayas to the people in Europe. The Sherpas were also received in the Austrian Ministry of Environment by General Secretary Reinhard Mang.
