KATHMANDU, Dec 12: Save the Children, with support from European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Operations, has received a critical aid of 800 winter tents. These life-saving shelters are destined for the earthquake-affected regions of Jajarkot and Rukum West.

EU Ambassador Veronique Lorenzo handed over the tents in Kathmandu. In the wake of the deadly earthquake, which claimed 32 lives, including three children, due to severe cold, these fire-resistant, waterproof tents equipped with stoves will offer a 23 square meter living space and endure harsh winter conditions.

"The EU is pleased to offer this timely support. These tents and logistical aid will safeguard lives, particularly of women, infants, and the elderly," said Ambassador Lorenzo.

Since the 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Jajarkot and Rukum West on November 3rd, vulnerable groups, including children, pregnant women, and the elderly, have suffered disproportionately. Heather Campbell, Save the Children's Country Director in Nepal, said, "The freezing temperatures have claimed many lives. The winter tents supported by the EU will provide temporary shelter and save lives."

Besides the material assistance, Save the Children commits to working with local partners and the government, addressing the urgent needs of quake-affected communities, thanks to a €600,000 (Rs 865.5 million) contribution.
