EU offers 22m Euro to Peace Fund

KATHMANDU, Oct 30: European Union (EU) has pledged to provide Euro 22 million (Rs 2.15 billion approximately) grant to Peace Fund to help facilitate the ongoing peace process in Nepal.



Officials at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction (MoPR) said the Ministry of Finance (MoF) is preparing to take a proposal to this effect in the cabinet for approval. [break]



The grant assistance to be provided in phases will be used for various peace process related works including for the formation of Truth Reconciliation Commission, supporting conflict displaced and affected people, promoting human rights and holding election after promulgation of the new constitution.



According to a quarterly report published recently, the Peace Fund has a total Rs 420 million deposit in its purse.



Among other things, Peace Fund is entrusted to provide necessary support for the rehabilitation of the displaced, manage cantonments, assist in setting up and operating organizations that are related with and support implementation of the peace process, and make arrangements for technical support, cash and commodities necessary for physical structure, machineries, equipment, materials, communication system and training that are necessary for the promotion and strengthening of peace and security.
