KATHMANDU, Sept 13: Ambassador Alexander Spachis, head of the European Union Delegation to Nepal, has completed his full tenure on Friday and will be returning to Brussels on September 16.

Following the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty and the creation of the European External Action Service (EEAS), he was appointed as the first fully accredited resident ambassador of the European Union Delegation to Nepal in late 2009, according to a press statement issued by Delegation of European Union to Nepal. Ambassador Spachis is also the first EU Representative to SAARC.[break]

Following his appointment, the delegation in Kathmandu became a full-fledged delegation of the European Union representing all the EU Institutions, growing from a relatively small office into a fully functioning and active diplomatic mission.

"I am leaving at a time when Nepal is holding the second elections to the Constituent Assembly, which are very important for Nepal since it will pave the way for drafting a democratic and inclusive Constitution in the months ahead. The European Union has extended full support to the Government of Nepal to make the elections successful and will be deploying an Election Observation Mission, which will arrive to Nepal in the first week of October," Ambassador Spachis said.

"I would like to thank the Government of Nepal, development partners and people from different walks of life for their efforts to promote EU-Nepal relations during my tenure as EU Ambassador," he added.

Spachis assured that the European Union will continue to support Nepal in its efforts to put into place democratically-elected institutions, both at the local and higher levels to ensure that the dividends of progress and development reach the marginalised and less privileged members of the Nepalese society.
