At the meeting held at the Presidential Office in Shital Niwas in the morning, President Dr Yadav urged the top leaders of UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML to move ahead with consensus, expressing his deep concerns over the political crisis in the country. [break]
The president is learnt to have cautioned the leaders that continuing political deadlock could push the country toward a great catastrophe, according to party sources.
The initiative by the president comes amid failure of the political parties to form a new government even two months after the resignation of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. The prolonged delay in forming new government has not only threatened the already precarious peace process but also affected day to day work of the government.
As the big three parties during the meeting blamed each other for the political deadlock, the president suggested to the parties to end the deadlock through bilateral and trilateral talks at the earliest.
Both the Maoists and NC top leaders at the meeting had asked for votes from each other to form a new government, according to UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal.
Talking to mediapersons after the meeting, Khanal alleged that NC and the Maoists were inviting disaster in the country by trying to form a majority government. “Only consensus government can ensure peace and constitution,” he said. “Formation of a majority government would mean pushing the country to a disaster.”
NC Acting President Sushil Koirala said the Maoists were to be blamed for the current political deadlock in the country. “They should support NC for forming new government,” he said. “NC won´t have any problem if the government is formed under their leadership once the ongoing peace process is concluded.”
Koirala argued that the Maoists should be more responsible as the current political deadlock was invited by the Maoists.
Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who was present in the meeting, refused to speak to the media.
