CHITWAN, April 28: Chitwan is in the grip of election fever as major political parties step up their election campaigns. Though election to the Constituent Assembly (CA) is unlikely till November, UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML have already started visiting far-flung villages to garner support in favor of their respective candidates during the election.

While the UCPN (Maoist) leaders are organizing gatherings in five electoral constituencies, CPN-UML has come up with a “door-to-door campaign” across the district. [break]Similarly, Nepali Congress (NC) is busy calculating and updating the number of the party supporters and voters in all the five constituencies of the district.

While major parties are busy preparing plans to win election, leaders from Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist are preparing to disrupt polls.

“UML leaders will visit every household in the district and enquire about people´s aspirations and collect their feedback,” said the party´s district chief Jagannath Thapaliya. The party has also mobilized district-level leaders to far-flung villages.

During the campaign, UML leaders are telling people that the previous CA failed to deliver a new constitution as it was led by the UCPN (Maoist). They also held the UCPN (Maoist) for dissolution of CA.

During the previous CA election, UML won only one seat in the five constituencies of the district.

UCPN (Maoist) leaders have claimed that would secure more votes than during the pervious CA election. Their main focus is on retaining cadres and stopping them from joining the CPN-Maoist. UCPN (Maoist) leaders are lately recruiting youths in the Young Communist League with a plan to mobilize them for publicity campaigns and “security purposes” during the polls.

“We are going to get more votes this time around because we found people lost faith in NC and UML. Also, there is renewed support to our party in the rural areas,” said UCPN (Maoist) leader Ghanshyam Dahal.

In the previous election, top UCPN (Maoist) leaders Ram Bahadur Thapa Magar, Amik Sherchan, Narayan Dahal and Shova Kattel were elected from the district. Magar and Kattel have joined the newly-formed CPN-Maoist.

NC has deployed separate teams comprising 18 leaders each to the five constituencies. “The teams will make an assessment of the existing support base and actions to be taken to improve the party´s situation in all the constituencies,” said NC district president Tek Prasad Gurung. In the previous CA election, NC had won no seats in the district. “We are much stronger now,” claimed Gurung.

CPN-Maoist, however, is devising strategies to disrupt the polls.

“The recently-concluded central committee meeting of our party has decided to disrupt the polls,” said CPN-Maoist central committee member Anil Sharma. He said the party´s immediate plan is to disrupt the ongoing voter registration drive and later to thwart polls.
