Eight loyalists of Durga Prasai charged with murder case

KATHMANDU, Oct 8: Eight supporters of Durga Prasai have been charged with murder for allegedly setting fire to two trucks in Jhapa by throwing petrol bombs while the drivers were inside.


The attack occurred in protest against the arrest of medical entrepreneur Prasai. Police took action after the death of one of the truck drivers, prosecuting eight members of Prasai’s ‘Nation, Nationality, Religion-Culture and Civil Protection Campaign’ in connection with the incident.

According to the police, the accused include Bhim Tumbapo Limbu, 40; Bivash Limbu, 24; and Bir Bahadur Gurung, 51, of Haldibari-1, Jhapa; Suresh Chaudhary, 33, of Birtamod-7; Udaya Limbu, 35, of Birtamod-3; Balihang Mabo Limbu, 34, of Buddha Shanti Rural Municipality-4; Rajesh Mahat, 34, of Mechinagar Municipality-6; and Rudra Bhujel, 38, of Arjundhara Municipality-9.


The first truck, with Indian registration number UP 57 AT 4493, was set on fire at 10:30 PM on September 22 at the Biring Khola bridge on the East-West Highway in Kankai Municipality-8, Jhapa. A second Indian truck, with registration number WB 73 E 3056, was torched at 2:30 AM near the Giri Bandhu Tea Estate in Birtamod Municipality-6.


One of the truck drivers, Podo Raya, who was critically injured in the arson near Giri Bandhu Tea Estate, died on October 5 while receiving treatment at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in India.
