RAUTAHAT, Dec 10: Eight people lost their lives and five others were injured in a tragic Scorpio accident at Monday midnight on the East-West Highway in Rautahat.
The vehicle, a Scorpio (Ba 16 Cha 3162), was returning from Gadhimai Temple in Bara when it veered off the road in the Lamaha Jungle and hit a tree before plunging about 30 meters into the forest, according to DSP Rajkumar Rai at the Area Police Office, Chandranigahapur.

Among the deceased are 60-year-old Larubadi Devi Mahara, 30-year-old Urmila Devi Mahara, 50-year-old Ramkumari Devi Mahara, 55-year-old Mahangi Devi Mahara, 62-year-old Phulbanti Devi Chamar, 60-year-old Ramkumari Devi Mahara, 30-year-old Sakuntala Devi Mahara and the driver, 40-year-old Shiva Kumar Yadav. They are all residents of Arnama Rural Municipality in Siraha district.
The accident, which occurred around 12:30 pm, is believed to have been caused by over speeding. The injured are receiving treatment at Vayodha Hospital in Birgunj, Parsa, police said.
