Mira Urab had given birth to an under-weight son on September 2 but the child couldn´t live for more than two hours as she couldn´t afford to keep the newborn at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Doctors had said the 700-gram baby could have been saved in ICU.[break]
Mira, 25, has had delivered premature babies in all the eight instances. She delivered her first son in the eighth month of pregnancy while some of her children were delivered as early as the sixth month.
Mira´s husband Raj Kumar has married another woman last January after seven of her children didn´t survive. “I have given births to children one after another in the hope that the babies would survive. But all of them died,” Mira rued.
Doctors say that the premature deliveries may be a result of the premature opening of the uterus. “There is a chance of premature delivery if the uterine opening is loose.
There may also be some problems in her blood,” gynecologist at Koshi Zonal Hospital Dr Yogendra Mishra said. The fact that Mira has not had excruciating labor pain also suggests that the uterine opening may be loose. “She should be thoroughly examined and the mouth of uterus should be tightened before she becomes pregnant,” Dr Mishra suggested.
Dr Mishra said generally babies weighing over 2.5 kilograms survive while those weighing 1.5 kilogram need ICU care for survival. However, Mira had seven of her children delivered unattended.

She had gone to the Primary Health Center (PHC) in Urlabari for consultation in the latest case. “We don´t know what has led to her repeated premature deliveries. Her health is normal and the problem may be due to lack of medical advice during pregnancy,” Chief of the PHC Bhavesh Thapa opined.
