KATHMANDU : Price of eggs in Chitwan has doubled to Rs 260 per case in just three months. The price was Rs 130 per case during July.

Poultry entrepreneurs have attributed rise in prices of eggs to rise in cost of feeds and other inputs. ´The demand for egg is increasing but production is down.[break]

This mismatch in demand/supply situation is the main reason behind rise in price,´ Shiva Ram KC, president of Nepal Eggs Producers Association, told Republica.

According to KC, Chitwan itself is facing shortage of poultry products after the government culled chickens during bird-flu outbreak a few months ago. ´The government action seriously affected poultry business across the country. It will take around one year for the situation to be normal,´ KC said.

There are around 500 poultry farms in Chitwan. The district supplies more than 60 percent of the eggs consumed across the country.
