“The EC issued a call to political parties for registration today (Sunday),” said EC Spokesperson Madhu Prasad Regmi, adding, “We will start registering new parties from Tuesday for a month.” [break]
As per the existing provision, EC can give political parties a deadline of maximum one month for registration for the purpose of contesting election.
Altogether 119 political parties have registered at EC so far. According to EC, 54 political parties had contested the CA elections in 2008 and 25 parties were elected.
EC is current busy holding discussions with stakeholders across the country in order to seek their views on fresh election and to inform them about the preparations being made for the polls.
EC has been waiting for issuance of the ordinance on amending the Election of Members of the Constituent Assembly Act, 2013 to make for making full-fledged preparations for new polls.
The Interim Election Council has failed to approve the ordinance as political parties are sharply divided over the proposed provision related to eligibility threshold for seats under proportional quota and downsizing of CA (from 601 to 491members), among others.
